Insert > Symbol

From the Unicode tab of the Symbol dialog box, you can enter unicode characters that are not on the keyboard.

Unicode is a 2-byte international standard character code system that expresses various languages in a uniform way.

Steps

  1. Click Insert > Symbol.
  2. From the Symbol dialog box, select the Unicode tab.
  3. From the Character Domain list select Greek and from the Characters list select β.

    Or, type 03B2 in Unicode. The symbol β gets selected in the Characters list.

  4. Click Insert. The symbol β gets inserted at the pointer.

Character Domain

Select the domain that the required character belongs to.

Characters

Display a list of characters that are included in the selected domain from the Character Domain list.

Unicode

Display the unicode of the character selected from the Characters list. If you type the hexadecimal code number of the character, the character will be displayed in the Characters list box.

Recent Text

Recently used characters are displayed.

You can see this list if you click the drop-down arrow of the Symbol icon in the Insert Assistant group of the Insert tab.

Input Text

If you double-click a character or select a character in Characters and click Select, the character is displayed in Input Text.

When you add multiple characters to Input Text and click Insert, all the characters displayed in Input Text are inserted in the edit window.

Select Button

If you select a character in Characters and click Select, the character is displayed in Input Text.

Add Button

Register all characters added to Input Text in a new character domain.

If you click Add and the Add All to Custom Symbol dialog box appears, you can specify character domain name and register characters.

Large Icon for Selected Character

If you point to a character in the Characters list, the function enlarges the character.

Details on Icons

Icon Name Description
Add to Custom Symbol Adds the characters selected in the Character Domain list or in the Recent Text list to Custom Symbol.
In the Add to Custom Symbol dialog box, you can select a character domain in Character Domain List to Add and register Text to Add.
Add All to Custom Symbol Adds all characters displayed in the Recent Text list to Custom Symbol.
In the Add All to Custom Symbol dialog box, select a character domain in Character Domain List to Add and add all the characters recently used.
Delete Deletes currently selected characters from the Recent Text list or the Characters list of the Custom tab.

Insert Multiple Characters at Once

To add a character in Input Text, select the character from the Characters list of the Symbol dialog box and click Select. You can also press SPACEBAR on the character or double-click it to add the character in Input Text. If you select multiple characters, add them to Input Text, and then click Insert, the characters are inserted at the pointer in the edit window all at once.

You can also add adjacent characters to Input Text by selecting the characters and hold down SPACEBAR in the Symbol dialog box. If you select  with the pointer on the Characters list, hold down SPACEBAR, and release SPACEBAR at , the 10 characters from  through  are added to Input Text.

Move Pointer with Keys

In the Characters list, you can select characters by using the pointer or arrow keys (<←>, <→>, <↑>, <↓>).

Key Description
HOME/END Points to the first character domain or the last character domain in the Character Domain list.
Points to the first character or the last character in the Characters list.
PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN Moves to the previous screen or the next screen in the Character Domain list or the Characters list.
CTRL+↑/CTRL+↓ Displays a list of characters that belong to the previous character domain or the next character domain of the currently selected character domain in the Character Domain list.
SPACEBAR Press SPACEBAR in the Characters list to insert the currently selected character at the pointer in the edit window and move the selection one space to the next character.

Open Symbol from Another Dialog Box, CTRL+F10

To insert symbols when you edit the body and also when you type in the text box of the dialog box of certain functions.

For example, to insert a symbol in Home > Find, place the pointer in the text box and press CTRL+F10 or click the right mouse button. In the context menu, select Symbol to open the Symbol dialog box.

Font

When a character selected in Symbol is inserted in the edit screen, it follows the text size and properties of the position where the pointer was.

Add to Custom Symbol

You can select a character in the Symbol dialog box and register it in an existing character domain of Custom Symbol. You can also create a new character domain and register the character in it. You can reduce the time required to search for characters, if you register frequently used characters in the character domain of custom symbols.
